The Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait chipset and 1 GB RAM handled Android 4.0 fine at launch, with an upgrade path to Jelly Bean 4.1. Storage comes in 16, 32 or 64 GB variants, plus microSD support up to 32 GB if you need more room. The 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen at 540 x 960 keeps things compact and pocketable at just 129 g.

The 8 MP rear camera shoots 1080p video and there's a basic VGA front camera for calls. Battery capacity is modest at 1520 mAh, but that's where the Padfone's trick comes in: an optional Padfone Station dock adds a 10.1-inch display and a much larger 6600 mAh battery, effectively turning the phone into a tablet when you need one.
