This is a point-and-shoot built for people who want more control than a typical compact camera offers. The 14.2 megapixel CCD sensor pairs with a 5x optical zoom lens (27-135mm equivalent) and optical image stabilization, useful for handheld shots at the tele end. There's no viewfinder, so you're composing entirely through the 3.5-inch touchscreen, which at 1,152,000 dots is sharp enough for framing and reviewing shots on the spot.
What sets the ST600 apart from typical ultracompacts is the manual exposure control. Aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual mode are all here, alongside multi, center-weighted, and spot metering. Macro focus goes down to 5cm, and the built-in flash covers up to 5 metres. Video tops out at 1280x720 in Motion JPEG format, and storage runs on microSD/SDHC cards with just 13MB built in. At 150g and 104 x 60 x 20mm, it's genuinely pocketable. Battery comes via a removable Lithium-Ion SLB07 pack, and there's a mono mic for video, USB 2.0 and HDMI out for playback on a bigger screen.
